English luxury carmaker Rolls-Royce has today unveiled the Dawn Drophead, a high-end four-seater convertible that the company expects will appeal to a "younger and more social customer" than what is typical for the marque.
But just don't call it a Wraith convertible.
Despite sharing much of its visage with the two-door Wraith coupe (and by extension, the four-door Ghost upon which it's based), Rolls-Royce prefers you think of it as a means to "bathe in the sunlight of the world’s most exclusive social hotspots".
And while there's some interchangeability between the Wraith and the Dawn's sheetmetal, Rolls-Royce asserts that 80 percent of the Dawn's exterior is entirely unique.
The common 20 percent appears to consist of the doors and front quarter panels. The bonnet and front bumper, while outwardly similar to the Wraith's, differ slightly.
Underneath you'll find the same twin-turbo 420kW/780Nm 6.6 litre V12 as used by the Ghost, hooked up to an eight-speed automatic that uses map data to determine the steepness of the road ahead and adjust its shift pattern accordingly.
And though the Dawn is more about top-down cruising, it's no slug. Rolls-Royce claims it'll sprint to 100km/h in 4.9 seconds, which is no small feat for a car weighing north of 2.5 tonnes.
But the roof is the real centrepiece, and is able to open and close fully in 22 seconds at speeds up to 50km/h. More impressively, it does do in complete silence - no whirring, no clicking.
Roof-up, Rolls-Royce claims the Dawn's cabin is the quietest of any convertible available today.
It should also be one of the most generously-proportioned too, with back seat passengers enjoying huge legroom thanks to the Dawn's 3112mm wheelbase and 5285mm overall length.
“The idea of creating a car like Dawn that can be used in comfort by only two adults on a day to day basis is anathema,"said Giles Taylor, Rolls-Royce's director of design.
"In creating Dawn we have accepted no compromise to the comfort and luxury of four adults who want to travel together in the pinnacle of style.”
The Dawn's feature list is long and includes high-tech equipment like a head-up display, LED headlamps with auto high-beam, night vision pedestrian detection, and a touchpad controller and 10.25-inch display for its infotainment system.
An Australian market debut and pricing has yet to be confirmed, however expect more information to sufrace after the Dawn's first public appearance at the Frankfurt Motor Show
