Australians bought fewer new motorcycles in 2014 than they did in 2013, with new data revealing that overall sales fell 2.2 percent for the year.

A total of 111,599 new motorcycles were registered in Australia last year, compared to 113,289 in 2013.

The boom years for scooter sales in Australia also appear to be over (at least for now), with the segment suffering the biggest drop at 19.7 percent.

This compares to a 12.4 percent drop from 2013 to 2012, when 9,565 scooters found new homes. Only 7,676 scooters were sold in Australia last year.

Sales were also down for all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and dirt bikes, but road-going bikes bucked the trend with sales up 1.5 percent; accounting for almost 40 percent of the market.

Registrations for road bikes totalled 44,530 units in 2014 compared to 43,724 for the year before, with Honda leading the way on 9,011 sales.
