The company's latest project, however, is a little closer to the practical side of bonkers: the Dock+Go concept.
Caught somewhere between trailer and pickup tub, the Dock+Go system transforms the Smart ForTwo Electric Drive into a six-wheeled ute.
Rinspeed's Frank M Rinderknecht says he dreamed up the concept in his search for a solution to the ForTwo's tiny storage space, made worse in the Electric Drive by its space-gobbling battery pack.
Apart from offering additional cargo room, the Dock+Go "backpack on wheels" provides its own power, thanks to its ability to accommodate a small combustion engine.
It can also be used to hold a larger battery pack, extending the car's driving range for cross-country trips.
Rinspeed will show the Dock+Go system at March's 2012 Geneva Motor Show, but if it's an itty-bitty ute you're after, Smart's own For-Us concept could be just the ticket.
