Skoda is developing a conventional hatchback version of its new Rapid hatch, according to a new report.

UK mag Autocar report that the new model will feature more Golf-like rear proportions than the Rapid’s sedan-like notchback profile.

This suggests the new car could form a production version of the VisionD concept shown at Geneva last year.

The VisionD preceded the Frankfurt-unveiled Mission L concept that directly previewed the soon-to-be launched Rapid production car.

However, the Czech manufacturer’s sales and marketing boss Jürgen Stackmann has dispelled talk of a direct production route for the VisionD.

“Its not that car”, Stackmann told Autocar.

One potential purpose for the new hatch could be to replace the ageing Fabia model which, in its current form, has been on sale in Europe, since 2007.

Replacing the Fabia with the new model would follow recent Volkswagen Group convention, with the current Fabia using the previous-generation Polo’s PQ24 architecture.

The new model is expected to use the current Polo’s PQ25 architecture.

While Stackmann would not reveal the name for the new model, giving some credence to the potential for a new Fabia, he did confirm that there would be no three-door version - also like the current Fabia.

Fabia replacement or not, the report suggests a launch date of late 2013 for the new model.
