Rumours of an up-spec Infiniti-badged version of the Nissan GT-R stretch as far back as 2008, but new reports this week have brought the idea back from hibernation.

According to British magazine Car, Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn has dropped a hint or two that suggest the Japanese brand may be looking to infuse its luxury brand with the legendary power of the GT-R.

In an interview with the magazine this week, Ghosn is quoted as saying that Nissan and Infiniti have covered all the the passenger car market demands, leaving only the high-powered supersports prestige halo car.

"[...] we have a lot of people saying "why don’t we use the power of the GT-R and give it an Infiniti body?" Ghosn told Car.

"The idea makes sense. It’s a great car, the GT-R. Is it a project now? No. But I don’t want to give you the impression we’ll never do that. But I don’t want you to think that it’s coming in the next two to three years either."

Utilising a verison of the GT-R's twin-turbo V6, which produces 390kW and 612Nm in its current trim, would allow Infiniti to step into the ring (or roll onto the Nurburgring) with the likes of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG.

And a production version of the popular Essence concept could be just the car for the job. As Ghosn says however, there's a few years at least before we'll (maybe) see GT-R power in Infiniti showrooms.
