A new rendering of Mazda's next 2 hatch has surfaced online this week, courtesy of design wiz Theophilus Chin (opens in new window).

There's few surprises on offer here, with the single image taking elements from the new CX-5, Mazda6 and Mazda3 models, which all share a largely identical family design.

Of course, there's little reason to expect the new Mazda2 to veer from the course set out by its larger stablemates, so we can likely view this rendering as a solid preview of what's to come.

This latest rendering comes some 12 months after an image surfaced in the Japanese press, although it is believed that too was a commissioned rendering.

Little has been revealed about the new Mazda2, although reports in the past year have claimed that the light hatch will ride on a shortened version of the larger Mazda3 and CX-5 platform.

For now, the carmaker has promised to launch five new models between now and 2016, and we can expect those to at least include the new Mazda2, the next MX-5 and a replacement for the big CX-9.

We should also see Mazda's new 'Skyactiv 2' engines in the new hatch, outlined in an interview today with Mazda's powertrain boss Mitsuo Hitomi.

Watch for the new Mazda2 to appear this year, possibly as soon as March's Geneva Motor Show.
