Holden's next-generation Astra, spied testing in recent months by German counterpart Opel, has been given an unofficial preview this week by independent artist Remco Meulendijk.

These latest renderings, among the latest ‘guesses’ at the look of the coming fifth-generation Astra hatch, reveal some predictable styling cues.

Opel’s recently revealed Karl hatch shares a number of basic elements with this mocked-up hatch, and some subtle cues from Opel’s Monza concept can also be seen.

The new Astra will take on a more angular profile than the curvaceous current model, although a sweeping tapered roofline still dominates.

Australian buyers will eventually get a close-up look at the new Astra, with Holden confirming last year that it will import not only the current model, but also future versions of the Mazda3 rivalling range - all wearing the lion badge, of course.

In fact, the current Astra, offered here in 2013 as part of GM's year-long bid to make the Opel brand work in Australia, makes its local return this week. (Watch for TMR's review.)
