Renault has denied reports it has been involved in a exhaust emission cheating scandal similar to the one that cost Volkswagen billions of dollars.
The French car maker described a story in France's Liberation newspaper as "unbalanced" and claimed there is no "defeat device" present in its cars, and that the brand can prove compliance with US emissions requirements.
Renault says it cannot comment on an ongoing investigation into pollution levels in France that allegedly exceed regulatory limits.
According to the reports, investigators from the French Economy Ministry raided Renault’s offices after the Volkswagen ‘dieselgate’ revelations and found, in real-life conditions, two Renault models – the Captur SUV and Clio – had exhaust emissions of NOx which were higher than the legal limit (the Captur by as much as 337 per cent). The Ministry lodged its findings with prosecutors back in November.
