What appeared in an earlier teaser to be a special ‘concept’ version of the new Renault Trafic van has been revealed as the star of a new short video.

As revealed last week, the large van has been modified as a tribute to 80s TV series Knight Rider, which starred actor David Hasselhoff and the artificially intelligent Trans Am-based KITT.

Filmed as a promo piece for the new Trafic - due in Australia next year - TraficRider sees protagonist Michael Knight replaced with ‘everyday hero’ Michael Craftsman.

“This is an unprecedented initiative for a Renault LCV. The intention is to give Trafic a more dynamic image and reach out to a broader audience than simply business users,” Renault marketing boss Caroline Mechai says.

KITT, of course, is replaced with the modified Trafic van, boasting iconic strobing light bars up front, and retro 80s iPad- and iPhone-based interfaces in the cabin.

The new KITT also replaces its own roving mobile garage - the big truck known in the show as ‘The Rook’ - with its own compact workshop in the rear cargo space.
