Meet the Renault TraficRider; or at least a shadowy outline of the new van as the French carmaker keeps its latest concept under wraps.
It’s no secret the concept is based on Renault’s new Trafic load-hauler, but the ‘Rider’ part of the name poses a few questions.
In Renault’s short teaser video (top of page), the Trafic’s grille features ‘chasing’ lights running across the front - reminiscent of television’s favourite talking car from the 1980s (and later, a modern interpretation).
The likely connection then is between the Trafic and a television crime-fighter called Knight Rider, played by David ‘The Hoff’ Hasselhoff.
Why Renault didn’t choose to align its new concept with the TV show’s car - K.I.T.T. - rather than the human is unclear, as is the connection between the TV series and the commercial van.
The original KITT was based on a Pontiac TransAm, so perhaps the Trafic’s lack of muscle-car credentials lead Renault to avoid comparing the two.
All will be revealed on September 2, when Renault plans to pull the covers off its new creation and (hopefully) provide an explanation.
