Not content to have Spanish brand Seat steal the FWD Nurburgring lap record with its Leon Cupra 280, Renault is gearing up for an assault on the fearsome German track with an even more-focused version of the Megane RS.
According to a source familiar with the project, the hard-core Megane variant will feature extensive weight-reduction measures, as well as an Ohlins suspension, Akrapovic titanium exhaust and track-spec Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tyres.
It will also wear an RS275R badge on its rump, indicating that power will jump from 265PS to 275PS - or from 195kW to just over 202kW.
How fast will it be? Word is that Renault is targeting a 7:45 lap time, which - if achieved - would smash the 7:58 lap recorded by the Leon Cupra 280 last month.
And it will set a very lofty target for Japanese rival Honda, which has pledged that the upcoming Civic Type R will be the fastest hot hatch around the Nurburgring by the time it launches.
