Renault could employ the expertise of Caterham to help bring the long-anticipated new Alpine model to fruition, according to a report out of France this week.

French magazine L’Equipe reports that the two companies are considering an alliance, which could also benefit Caterham in developing its upcoming flagship sports car.

According to the report, Caterham's experience with lightweight and agile sports cars has drawn Renault's interest.

Expectation of an Alpine revival was recently reignited with the unveiling of the Alpine A110-50 concept at the Monaco Grand Prix in June.

At the time, Renault COO Carlos Tavares was ambitious of the return of the Alpine brand.

“There's at least a 50 percent chance of that happening", Tavares said.

The L’Equipe report suggests that Caterham boss Tony Fernandes met with Tavares in May to discuss the venture.

“We’ve had talks with potential partners. We’ll decide whether or not to revive Alpine before the end of this year, but I think there’s a good chance we will”, Tavares said this week.

The report also suggests that Renault previously considered Lotus for the partnership, but has preferred the relative stability of Caterham - with the two entities already aligned in the F1 arena.

Whilst not yet set in stone, Tavares’ repeated positivity regarding the project suggests there’s a good chance a new Alpine model is coming.
