Renault has offered the first subtle glimpse of a new SUV, set to take the stand at this year’s Beijing Auto Show.

Called the Maxthon, the new SUV is tipped to take the place of the current Koleos, although the new name may not arrive in all markets.

While the first look at such a small detail gives little away, Renault’s C-shaped light signature, as seen on the Megane and Talisman, is clearly visible.

With the Renault Kadjar now nipping at the heels of the current Koleos in terms of size, the Maxthon is expected to grow, with a rumoured 4700mm length making it 180 mm longer than the Koleos.

For the Chinese market the Maxthon will arrive with five seats, however elsewhere a seven-seat variant is also likely, to take advantage of the new, larger dimensions.

Under the skin, the Maxthon will share its Renault-Nissan Common Module Family platform with the likes of the Renault Megane and Kadjar, but will be more closely related to the Nissan X-Trail. Engines will include Renault’s turbocharged four-cylinder petrol and diesel offerings.

For Renault Australia a new Koleos can’t arrive quickly enough, with the current model having been on sale since 2008. However the Maxthon is unlikely to begin right-hand-drive production in Korea until 2017 at the earliest.
