Renault has announced that it is developing a mild-hybrid drivetrain for use in future models.

Until now, the French carmaker has taken an ‘electric only’ approach to its vision of a greener automotive future, and has launched four pure-electric models to date.

Renault revealed its plans at the recent Diesel Powertrain Congress in France, hosted by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).

French industry website L'UsineNouvelle reports that the system will consist of a relatively small battery, a starter alternator and a small electric motor. It will be designed to augment both petrol and diesel drivetrains.

The technology sounds similar in approach to the modular system recently launched by Mercedes in Europe, and Renault touts the system as a ‘super start-stop system with regenerative braking’ rather than a mild hybrid.

The announcement also confirms that Renault will leave full-hybrid models to its alliance partners Nissan and Infiniti.

It is unclear at this stage which Renault models will benefit from the mild-hybrid technology, as the system is not expected for production until 2017.

For now, the carmaker's green technology remains focused on electric vehicles, including the Fluence Z.E. - on its way to Australia this year - and the recently revealed Zoe EV
