As Renault continues development of its premium new midsized SUV, the brand’s local arm has introduced a refreshed Koleos range for the new model year.

For 2015, the eight year-old Koleos gains a number of new features, along with a pricing and model name shuffle.

Kicking off from $28,490 plus on-roads, the cost of entry into the Koleos range rises $500, but that increase is comfortably covered by a significant boost in standard kit.

A reversing camera is now standard across the range, and the entry Expression model also picks up Renault’s R-Link infotainment system with a 7-inch touch display and satellite navigation.

Also new to the Expression model are roof rails, automatic headlights and wipers, and heated door mirrors.

Next in the range is the the BOSE model, named for the company’s partnership with the sound specialist of the same name.

Holding steady at $35,490 for the petrol model and dropping $1500 to $37,490 for the diesel, the BOSE model adds daytime lights and new grey perforated leather trim.

The BOSE name gets extra attention in 2015, with the previous top-shelf Privilege model now replaced by the ‘new’ BOSE Premium.

Features in the new range-topper, beyond the regular BOSE model, include an electric panoramic glass sunroof, bi-xenon directional headlights and washers, and 18-inch ‘Bi’Ton’ alloy wheels. Apart from the new wheel design, the BOSE Premium represents little more than a name change.

Depending on the model, the 2015 Koleos range is powered by either a 126kW/226Nm 2.5 litre petrol engine or a 127kW/320Nm 2.0 litre diesel.

Likewise, six-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmissions are available, depending on the model.

Fuel consumption ranges from 7.0 l/100km to 9.6 l/100km, depending on the engine, transmission and front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive configuration.

The Koleos is covered by a five-year unlimited km warranty with give years of roadside assistance, and capped price servicing for the first three scheduled services at $299 per service.

SALES RACE (a crawl for some)

Despite it advancing years, Koleos sales have increased 46.4 percent in 2015 - although, at 268 year-to-date, the midsizer is far from dominant.

In 2015, the medium-SUV market is comfortably owned by the Mazda CX-5 with 6128 sales year-to-date, while the Nissan X-Trail (4989) and Toyota's RAV4 (4379) round out the top three.

Fourth place is anyone's, however, with the Subaru Forester (2440), Jeep Cherokee (2419), Honda CR-V (2199), Kia Sportage (2152) and the medium-large Mitsubishi Outlander (2018) all in the running.

Holden's Captiva 5 is well behind on 1062, while Ford's recently refreshed Kuga (785, down from 1391 this time in 2014) and the ageing Suzuki Grand Viara (655) are struggling for traction.
