Renault Sport, the in-house performance arm of French automaker Renault, has reportedly beefed up its Clio RS five-door light hatch with a more aggressive look, some motorsport-style features and a hotted-up engine with 250 metric horsepower - or 183kW.
Renault Sport released a teaser image of its high-tune Clio RS on Twitter over the weekend (featuring uniquely-shaped DRLs modelled on the Renault Sport logo), however photos of the completely unmasked car had already been leaked on a Greek enthusiast site.
Expected to be called the Clio RenaultSport KZ 01, it’s not entirely clear whether the car is a concept or a production car. Engine output has been listed at 183kW, but there are conflicting reports that it is powered by either a tuned version of the standard 1.6 litre turbo or a detuned version of the Megane RS’ 2.0 litre turbo.
The Clio RS 220 Trophy is currently the most powerful variant of the Clio family, with 162kW of power and 260Nm. An additional 21kW would provide a substantial increase in power, and make the KZ 01 the most powerful light hatch ever - more powerful even than the 170kW Audi S1 Sportback.
While there are question marks over the KZ 01’s engine, there’s no hiding its swollen bodywork that features wider front and rear guards, deeper side sills and a more aggressive front bumper and rear spoiler.
Inside, there’s a Formula One inspired steering wheel with built-in shift lights and gear display.
The Clio RenaultSport KZ 01 is set to make its debut at the Monaco Grand Prix in three days, where all of its secrets will be revealed.
