A production version of Renault’s Captur concept will replace the European-market Modus small minivan line, according to a new report.

An un-named Renault insider reportedly confirmed with website Autonews Europe this week that the 2011 concept would inspire a production model, similar to alliance partner Nissan’s Juke small SUV.

The use of a small SUV to replace the Modus minivan would reflect the recent decline in the small minivan segment in Europe.

Renault is expected to produce less than 33,000 Modus cars for the European market in 2012, down from a best figure of 166,858 units in 2005.

In contrast, Nissan sold 106,461 examples of its Juke crossover in 2011.

The production Captur is expected to share the Nissan B0 platform used by the Juke and Modus, though it is unclear which powertrains will feature.

This would follow similar strategies from other brands, with Opel set to launch its Mokka small SUV this year, and Peugeot to produce an SUV based on the new 208 hatch in 2013.
