The historic Alpine brand will return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June, marking the latest step in the revival of the French sports car nameplate.

The Renault-backed plan will see a sole Alpine-branded LMP2 prototype racer compete in the 24 hour endurance race, along with the five-round 2013 European Le Mans racing series.

Teased in a single image for now, the project has come together via Renault-Nissan’s existing relationship with independant LMP2 team Signatech, and will continue to use a Nissan-sourced engine.

This will be the first time an Alpine-badged racer has contested Le Mans in 35 years, and follows the confirmation of an upcoming Alpine road car in November, following the unveiling of the A110-50 concept in Monaco last May.

Alpine’s new road car will be co-developed with UK sports carmaker Caterham, and the Porsche Boxster/Audi TT rival is expected to launch by 2016.

The new race program will keep the Alpine brand in the public eye in the meantime, and the racer is set for a full reveal on March 24, before the Silverstone first round of the European Le Mans Series on April 13.

Alpine previously contested the Le Mans 24 Hour race 11 times between 1963-78, and claimed outright victory in 1978 with a A442B prototype.

"Alpine’s return to the legendary Le Mans 24 Hours in 2013 marks the beginning of a new adventure which is set to last,” Renault boss Carlos Tavares said.
