Mazda is the latest Japanese carmaker to issue a mass recall on models fitted with Takata airbags as the saga continues to unfold.

Around 80,000 Mazda6s, RX-8s, E-Series vans, T-Series cab-chassis and B-Series pickups - all sold between August 2002 and November 2007 - are affected, along with a separate recall targeting Mazda6s sold between July 2005 and March 2009.

Over 34 million vehicles with Takata airbags have been recalled worldwide to date, as the airbag inflator units can rupture during deployment causing potentially lethal metal fragments to strike passengers in the vehicle.

Mazda’s latest recalls add to a growing list of models affected by the saga, which has also seen 130,000 Hondas, 33,000 Subarus and a combined 300,000 Toyotas and Nissans recalled in Australia in recent weeks.

And now, Honda can add its 2003-2006 MDX and 2001-2006 Accord models to the list, as they have also been recalled to deal with Takata airbags on the driver’s side.
