Holden has recalled its Volt range-extended electric vehicle, built between May 2012 and March 2013, due to a potential ‘misunderstanding’ the EV’s owners may have with the way the vehicle operates.

The carmaker believes drivers may not be heeding warning beeps to switch the vehicle off when leaving the vehicle (as the petrol engine may not be running at the time they exit).

However, if the vehicle is left ‘ON’, the battery may run down enough to cause the petrol engine to engage, as it’s designed to do, which may start without warning.

In these circumstances, the engine may run until the fuel supply is exhausted, potentially risking a build-up of carbon monoxide if parked in an enclosed area.

The company says a software update will resolve the issue, setting the vehicle to ‘time out’ in such circumstances.
