Range Rover Sport Coupe Coming, Will Target BMW X6 Photo:

Range Rover is expected to expand its family of luxury off-roaders with the addition of a fast-backed "coupe" based on the all-alloy chassis of the Jaguar F-Pace.

Referred to internally as the Evoque XL or Evoque Plus, UK magazine Autocar believes Range Rover's low-roofed SUV could be named the Range Rover Sport Coupe by the time it comes to market, which could be as early as next year.

Styled in the same vein as the BMW X6 and Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe, the Range Rover Sport Coupe is expected to "set new standards" for design and handling for the British marque, but measure around 20cm shorter than its German rivals.

Naturally, it will be markedly bigger than Range Rover's existing coupe-like SUV, the Evoque (below).

Its F-Pace derived platform with longitudinal engine will give it a performance edge over the Evoque's more pedestrian transverse-engine architecture, while also dropping weight thanks to its aluminium construction.

The engine range will likely mirror that of the F-Pace, though it's too early to tell whether Range Rover will elect to drop in a potent V8 option for a high-performance SVR variant.

In fact, it's too early to definitively say much, if anything, about a Range Rover coupe. The company remains quiet about whether such a model is coming, and Autocar's report is based on the testimony of unnamed "insiders".

What is clear, though, is that fastback SUVs enjoy surprising popularity. The BMW X6 is now well into its second generation, Mercedes-Benz has just launched the GLE Coupe and Audi is putting the finishing touches on its similarly-shaped Q8.

If Range Rover wants to keep up with the Germans, it'll need a sleek SUV of its own - and soon.
