Qoros Auto has unveiled its anticipated 2 PHEV concept in Shanghai this week, teasing what could be a new look for the startup Chinese-Israeli brand.

Debuting a front-end look oddly reminiscent of the 2001 Nissan GT-R concept, the Qoros 2 concept introduces tall new headlights and a broader take on the brand’s rectangular grille design.

The revised grille and new headlights extend through to the lower bumper, with long LED daytime lights adding to the concept’s unique styling.

The lighting theme continues at the rear, with narrow LED tail lamps extending up and forward into the rear quarter panels.

A large hand grab dominates the centre of bulging tailgate, above a pair of exhaust tips positioned at each corner. Fog lights and faux vents flank at either side.

The 2’s profile showcases an almost retro design, with a tall glasshouse sitting above softly muscled door panels and guards, along with a light panel of protective cladding through the centre.

While the 2 concept’s styling could hint at a new family look for the Chinese-Israeli Qoros brand, there’s another new trick under the skin: a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Output and performance figures have not been revealed, but Qoros says the 2 PHEV’s drive system sees a small new turbocharged petrol engine driving the front wheels, while a pair of high-capacity electric motors are positioned at the rear wheels to create an all-wheel-drive arrangement.

Developed from the ground-up as a PHEV, the Qoros 2 also benefits from having its batteries stored in the floor, conserving boot space and contributing to a low centre of gravity.

Interestingly, the Qoros 2 PHEV is charged via a fighter jet-like port that flips out from a panel at the base of the windscreen. (‘In-flight’ refuelling is unlikely to be one of the concept’s features…)

Qoros has yet to confirm production plans for the 2 concept, but with only the midsized ‘3’ range available right now, the brand could soon look to expand its line-up.

If the 2 does enter production, expect the PHEV model to be joined by conventional petrol and diesel options.

Australian buyers should not expect to see the Qoros badge on local roads anytime soon, with only left-hand-drive production confirmed for now.

The carmaker has confirmed it will focus on left-hook European markets for the foreseeable future, with a wider launch not expected to occur until at least 2016.

About Qoros: Headquartered in Shanghai, Qoros is a joint venture between China's Chery and Israel Corporation. It began deliveries of the Qoros 3 sedan in China in 2014, after first launching in late 2013 in Slovakia.
