Citroen and Peugeot have previewed new all-electric versions of the Berlingo and Partner vans, set to debut at the Hanover Motor Show later this month.

Badged simply Citroen ‘Electric Berlingo’ and Peugeot ‘Partner Electric’, both models package their electric drivetrain and battery systems within the existing architecture, maintaining the flat load area of their combustion-engined siblings.

This drivetrain consists of a 49kW/200Nm Mitsubishi-derived electric motor, with a 22.5kWh lithium-ion battery system providing an official range of 170km - similar to Nissan’s LEAF and Mitsubishi i MiEV passeneger EV models.

The new models remain available in two wheelbase lengths, while also matching the 675kg payloads (European market) of existing combustion engined versions.

Charging the battery system takes between six and 12 hours, depending on available current, with the option of an 80 percent quick charge in just 30 minutes.

This unveiling of the new EV models comes over 4.5 years into the current generation’s model life, but follows a mid-cycle refresh of both Partner and Berlingo earlier this year.

The ‘Electrics’ mark the third generation of PSA EV light commercial vehicles, with Citroen marketing ‘Electronique’ versions of its C15, C25, and first generation Berlingo previously.

This latest generation marks a vast improvement in capability though, considering the Berlingo Electronique’s range was limited to just 45km.

It’s too early to say whether Australia will see the new EV models, but European sales are set to commence mid-2013.
