The hot-selling Toyota 86 sports coupe and its Subaru BRZ twin are the subject of a recall for an electric power steering issue.

The cars in question were manufactured between April 2012 and March 2015 – Toyota says that’s 14,906 86 models and Subaru is reporting 3016 BRZs.

At issue is the electric power steering which can fail due to the wiring harness rubbing on a panel under the instrument panel which, on Australian specification vehicles, houses the driver knee airbag.

Over time the electric power steering sensor connector terminals may not make clean contact which could result in steering assistance failing and a dashboard warning light illuminating.
