Porsche’s Turbo Flat-Four Engine To Be Offered As 1.6, 2.0 and 2.5 Litre: Report

That Porsche is working on a new four-cylinder boxer engine is nothing new, but fresh reports out of Europe say that we can expect to see the new flat-four (which will power the next-generation Boxster and Cayman) in 1.6 litre, 2.0 litre and 2.5

That Porsche is working on a new four-cylinder boxer engine is nothing new, but fresh reports out of Europe say that we can expect to see the new flat-four (which will power the next-generation Boxster and Cayman) in 1.6 litre, 2.0 litre and 2.5 litre guise - all with turbocharging.

According to British magazine car, outputs will range from 156kW in the 1.6 to 268kW in the 2.5 litre, with the turbo 2.0 producing 213kW.

Torque figures are unknown for the 1.6, but the 2.0 is expected to make 400Nm while the 2.5 cranks out a massive 470Nm - the latter figure being 30Nm more than the 911 Carrera 4S, and 110Nm more than the current Boxster S

With the current Boxster producing 195kW and 280Nm from its 2.7 litre naturally-aspirated flat six, odds are the 2.0 will take over as the base model engine while the 2.5 will be reserved for the next-gen Boxster/Cayman S - or even a top-spec GTS model.

The 1.6, meanwhile, may be reserved for a new sub-Boxster entry level model, though the future of such a vehicle remains cloudy.
