Hot on the heels of the LA unveiling of the new 2013 Cayman coupe, comes news that Porsche is readying a range-topping turbocharged version.

Italian website 0-100 reports that a new 2.5 litre four-cylinder turbo boxer will join the range, sitting above the existing 205kW 2.7 litre and 242kW 3.4 litre naturally-aspirated sixers.

Earlier reports have suggested that Porsche has been developing a new four-cylinder boxer to replace the six cylinder engines later in the model's life cycle, but this latest report suggests it will instead be sold alongside these versions.

These earlier reports also suggested the engine would use two turbos, while 0-100 alludes to only one turbocharger being employed.

Either way, the engine’s output is likely to exceed 260kW/500Nm, pushing performance beyond that of the 242kW Cayman S model.
