Porsche Details All-electric Boxster E Prototypes

Porsche's push into the all-electric game is now at full-steam, the German brand today revealing details of its new Boxster E prototypes.

Described as 'mobile laboratories', the all-electric Boxster E prototypes form part of Germany's 'Model Region Electro-Mobility program', developed to study the feasability of electric vehicles in everyday life.

Porsche has built rear-wheel- and all-wheel-drive versions of its Boxster E cars. In AWD form, two electric motors are used - one at each axle - developing a combined 180kW and 540Nm of torque.

One of the motors and the transmission are located in the space where the regular Boxster's transmission and exhaust system are housed. A second electric motor features up front, where the Boxster's fuel tank would normally reside.

Porsche promises a 5.5 second 0-100km/h sprint for the AWD Boxster E, with a top speed of 200km/h. 

In RWD form, the Boxster E loses the front electric motor, dropping power to 90kW and 270Nm of torque. The 0-100km/h run is listed as 9.8 seconds, with a top speed of 150km/h.

Energy for both variants is provided by a 29kWh lithium iron-phosphate battery pack, offering a driving range of around 105km. 

With the electric motors and battery pack replacing the regular model's traditional mechanicals, the 1600kg Boxster E weighs around 200kg more than its petrol counterpart. 

Porsche has also included an Active Sound Design system that not only provides acoustic feedback for the occupants, but also works to alert other road users of the car's presence.
