Porsche is reportedly looking at bridging the gap between the barnstorming 911 GT2 RS and the upcoming 918 Spyder supercar.

In Europe, the GT2 RS starts at 237,000 euros, while the 918 Spyder carries a 400,000 euro premium over its 911 stablemate - leaving more than enough room to introduce a new model.

Unlike the 918 Spyder, which will be built in strictly limited numbers, the new model will likely have a 'regular' supercar production run that would have it competing with top-shelf models of other marques.

“There already are initial ideas that look very promising on paper,” Porsche’s sales chief, Bernhard Maier, told industry paper Autonews.

“Between the top 911 model and the 918 Spyder, there’s a price range that we’re not serving, but where other manufacturers are selling one or another product.”

Earlier reports have pointed to plans for a mid-engined supercar, pulling platform and mechanical components from both the 911 and the Boxster and Cayman twins.

These latest whispers of a new Porsche follow reports in recent months that the German carmaker is considering a hardtop coupe version of the 918 Spyder.

According to German magazine Autobild, the new model will be named the 961. If the reports are true, the 961 will be the second Porsche to bear those numbers; the first being a racing version of the popular 959 (which started life as a rally project).

The report adds that the 961 will enter the Porsche line-up above the 911 as a new flagship, powered by the same V8 petrol-electric hybrid combination that drives the 918 Spyder.
