Next year’s updated Boxster and Cayman lines will include the company's long-expected four-cylinder models, Porsche boss Matthias Mueller has confirmed this week.

Talk of a four-cylinder option in both ranges reaches back to at least 2008, but it was 2011 before former Porsche R&D chief Wolfgang Duerheimer confirmed that any such project was in the works.

Now, head honcho Matthias Mueller has told industry paper Automotive News that buyers will be given the choice of four- and six-cylinder powertrains from 2016.

Details on the new engine have not been offered, but earlier reports point to 2.0 and 2.5 litre versions of a turbocharged flat-four, with the capability to produce as much as 295kW.
