Porsche is already believed to be developing a new sub-Boxster sports car, but reports in recent months have also touched on a new supercar model.

Reportedly known internally as the 988, the new model - speculatively rendered above - would slot in between the 911 range and the hyper 918 Spider.

But while the new compact entry model will reportedly draw power from a turbo four, this new supercar is expected to feature a new flat eight.

According to Britain’s Autocar, a prototype of the eight-cylinder engine is currently being tested with a quad-turbo arrangement, producing around 450kW.

By comparison, Ferrari’s naturally-aspirated 458 - a natural rival to the so-called 988 - offers 419kW in regular form and 444kW in the new Speciale trim.

It is believed however that Ferrari will soon reveal a new turbocharged update to the 458, boosting power to a whopping 500kW.

But, as always, Porsche would likely have the range to extract significantly more power from the turbo eight for up-spec versions of the 988.

Elsewhere in the Porsche range, the special GT3 and 911 Turbo models offer an already handsome 350kW and 412kW respectively, while the 918 hybrid delivers a massive 661kW.

The Autocar report adds that the new super Porsche will hit showrooms in 2017. If it is correct, we could see concepts and spy photos appear as early as late 2014.
