With Porsche changing its naming convention to a numerical system for its sportscars (with the 718 range set to join the 911 soon) a name from the past has re-emerged and may grace the rump of a new range-topping sports tourer.
Last seen in 1995, the 928 moniker looks set to appear on a new front-engined coupe, but unlike the V8-only original, the new 928 is expected to offer a selection of turbocharged V6 and V8 engines, with both rear and all-wheel-drive models.
The drivetrain choices will mirror those of the second-generation Panamera, with the new 928 and Panamera set to share the Volkswagen group’s Porsche-developed premium MSB front engine, rear drive platform which will also be seen beneath the next Bentley Continental.
