PEUGEOT RCZR AUSTRALIA
Peugeot’s hotted-up RCZ R coupe is finally in Australia, nearly two years since its concept debut and a year on from its European market launch.
Buyers who waited will be rewarded with a 52kW and 55Nm power boost and a host of other performance enhancements - along with a significant price premium over the regular range.
Arriving in local showrooms at $68,990, the RCZ R marks a $10,000 increase over the current RCZ.
But, with 199kW of power and 330Nm of torque, it’s also a good deal more powerful than the 147kW/240Nm model it enters above.
Both versions are powered by a 1.6 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, but while the 147kW model claims a relatively pedestrian 0-100km/h time of 7.5 seconds, the RCZ R bolts to the line in just 5.9 seconds.
A 400-metre run will be covered in 14.2 seconds, the company says.
In RCZ R form, the coupe’s engine benefits from a special heat treatment prior to machining for improved durability, while the twin-scroll turbo has been developed specifically for higher output application.
New forged pistons with a compression ratio of 9.2:1 were developed by Mahle Motorsport, and use a grade of aluminium found in Formula One - a first for a production Peugeot model.
As with the concept that preceded it, a Torsen limited-slip differential sits below, and there's also a wider track, revised camber angle, re-tuned dampers, stiffer springs and a stiffer anti-roll bar.
Getting power to the front wheels - which also benefit from a wider track - is a strengthened six-speed manual transmission with an upgraded clutch setup.
The package is rounded out by stiffer springs and four-pot front brake calipers, wrapping 380mm discs mounted to an aluminium hub.
“The Peugeot RCZ R is not just a sporty version of the RCZ,” Peugeot Australia boss John Startari said.
“Developed with Peugeot Sport, the RCZ R has significant engineering modifications compared with the RCZ and was developed as a sports competition model for use on circuits and tracks.”
“The RCZ R is a perfect example of Peugeot’s expertise in motorsport. RCZ R is a halo model for the brand and we expect it will not only increase sales but bring new customers to Peugeot.”
Initially limited to 20 units for the local market, Peugeot Australia has now secured a total of 35 RCZ R coupes.
NOTE: Australian photos still to come.
