Peugeot and its parent company, Groupe PSA, have been busy of late with electric vehicle projects as part of a 34 new-vehicle onslaught from PSA.

Under PSA’s Push To Pass strategy, four of those 34 new models will be electric vehicles, set to join the ranks of the French carmaker over the next five years.

And to kick things off, Peugeot has unveiled its new L500 R HYbrid (complete with upper-case ‘Y’) concept boasting 500 HP (373kW) and 730Nm.

While branded a HYbrid, the L500 R (pictured) is actually a plug-in hybrid which uses two electric motors (one each, front and rear) along with a 201kW petrol engine for forward momentum.

The 0-100km/h sprint takes just 2.5 seconds, and Peugeot says the L500 will have covered a kilometre from rest inside 20 seconds.

Weight has been kept to 1000kg, which is also low in height at just one metre tall.

The concept is designed to pay tribute to the L45 Indy 500 racer driven by Dario Resta, which greeted the chequered flag at the famous American circuit on 30 May 1916 (100 year ago).

While the L500 may be purely a concept, some of the details for PSA’s four production EVs have come recently come to light.

Using the carmaker’s EMP2 platform, which underpins such models as the Peugeot 308 and Citroen C4 Picasso, the carmaker will launch both C- and D-segment EV models with front- and all-wheel-drive.

The CMP platform will form the basis of a shared project with Chinese partner Dongfeng, and will carry smaller B- and C-segment EV models.

Maximum driving range from the all-electric drivetrain is estimated at around 450km, mixing battery packs with outputs of anywhere between 13kWh for PHEV models (likely to be SUVs) to 50kWh.

Fast charging is also a major part of the EV projects, with the developing system set to deliver up to 12km of range for each minute of charging and up to 80 percent of the battery pack’s range in 30 minutes.

The PHEV models will see a turbocharged petrol engine matched with one or two electric motors, boasting an all-electric range of up to 60km and a recharging time of 2.5 hours using fast-charging.

Concepts aside, it won’t be Peugeot or Citroen which debuts the new EV tech for PSA, with reports indicating stand-alone luxury brand DS will be the first to offer the models to customers.
