Peugeot has introduced its 5008 wagon this week, offering Australian buyers a dedicated seven-seat option in the company's growing line-up.

Launched internationally in 2009, the 5008 is built on the same PSA PF2 platform that underpins Peugeot's 308 range and the 3008 crossover SUV, along with Citroen's C4 Picasso.

With seating for seven, the 5008 is classed internationally as a compact people-mover, rivalling the Honda Odyssey in the market space below larger offerings like the Kia Grand Carnival and the Toyota Tarago.

Positioned alongside the 4007 - a midsized SUV based on the previous Mitsubishi Outlander - the 'new' 5008 will be offered in just one trim grade.

The two-car range will start at $36,990 for the Touring Active Petrol automatic, while the Touring Active Diesel auto will be priced at $40,490.

Mechanical Package

Two familiar four-cylinder engines are available with the 5008, one diesel and one petrol.

In petrol form, the 5008 is powered by PSA's 1.6 litre engine producing 115kW and 240Nm of torque. Fuel consumption is rated at 7.6 l/100km.

Diesel buyers can look to the 2.0 litre HDi engine, offering 120kW and 340Nm, with fuel use rated at 6.3 l/100km.

Both engines are matched to a six-speed automatic transmission, and each is front-wheel-drive.

Suspension is by a pseudo McPherson setup at the front and a torsion-beam rear.

Features

Available in one equipment grade, the 5008 comes standard with 17-inch alloy wheels, fabric trim (leather a $3500 option), dual-zone climate control, a seven-inch retractable satellite navigation display, and two seven-inch screens in the rear.

The rear display has connectivity for a DVD player or games system, and is equipped with Bluetooth headphones. The multimedia system also offers USB and iPod connectivity.

Safety features include six airbags with curtain airbags that inflate to the third row, collapsible steering wheel, pre-tensioning front seat belts and ESP. There's also a reversing camera with rear parking sensors.

Seating in the second row can slide individually along a 130mm track, and back tilting is also featured.

Rear cargo capacity ranges from 758 to 823 litres, depending on the position of the third seating row.

Capacity increases to 1247 litres when the rear parcel shelf is removed and the vehicle is loaded to the roof. This can further increase to 2506 litres when the second row seats are folded away.
