Peugeot has pulled back the curtains on its upcoming and all-new 2012 Peugeot 4008 SUV, ahead of its Australian launch in the second quarter of next year.

Loosely based on the HR1 concept that debuted at last year's Paris Auto Show, the production 4008 shares its platform with the Mitsubishi ASX and, in part, elements of the Outlander platform.

Unlike the larger 4007 SUV, essentially a lightly facelifted version of the Mitsubishi Outlander, Peugeot's 4008 gets its own unique styling, with only the doors and other minor elements shared with the ASX.

Carrying considerably tougher styling than its Japanese counterpart, the 4008 wears Peugeot's new family styling language, including the new grille design that debuted with the launch of the 508 range earlier this year.

Mechanical Package

Power for the 4008 will be provided by a pair of petrol engines and two diesel engines.

The petrol range opens with the 1.6 litre four-cylinder engine, producing 85kW and 152Nm of torque. It will be paired with a five-speed manual transmission only.

Topping the 1.6 will be a Mitsubishi-sourced 2.0 litre petrol engine, producing 113kW and 198Nm of torque. This one will come with either a five-speed manual or a CVT automatic transmission.

On the diesel front, there's a 1.6 litre HDi FAP engine delivering 82kW and 270Nm of torque (up to 280Nm with the overboost function). This is paired with a six-speed manual.

Lastly, the 1.8 litre HDi FAP diesel produces 110kW and 300Nm of torque, also paired to a six-speed manual transmission.

Four-wheel-drive versions will also be offered, with three transmission modes: 2WD, 4WD and Lock.

In both four-wheel-drive modes the distribution of the torque between the front and the rear is managed electronically.

In Lock mode the four-wheel drive transmission becomes permanent, with even greater distribution of torque to the rear wheels.

Peugeot believes this transmission will represent more than 80 percent of sales, and in some areas it will be the only transmission offered - including in Europe.

Australian specifications have not been confirmed, but as one of the first markets to get the 4008, local details are likely to be revealed in the near future.

Features

In the cabin, the 4008 will offer a touch-screen navigation system and a reversing camera. There is also a panoramic glass roof and LED reading lamps.

Other features include Peugeot's "Open & Go" system and - in the specification shown here - 18-inch alloy wheels.

Australia

The 4008 is scheduled to make its Australian debut in the second quarter of 2012. Details will be revealed closer to launch.
