PEUGEOT 308 R CONCEPT
Peugeot has skipped the expected GTi model in its new 308 hatch range (for now at least), leaping directly into top-end R territory.
Revealed today, the 308 R Concept signals Peugeot's plans to take the new hatch to greater heights, surpassing the 147kW of power in the outgoing 308 GTi - and whatever numbers the next model will boast.
Surprising no-one, the carmaker's engineers have looked to another recent hot-pug - the new RCZ R coupe - to source the 308 R's power and handling technologies.
That means a more powerful 1.6 litre petrol engine producing 199kW and 330Nm of torque. That places it between the 162kW of the new Golf GTI, and the recently revealed 221kW 2014 Golf R - and above the 184kW Ford Focus ST, for that matter.
A six-speed manual transmission is on board, along with the RCZ R's Torsen limited slip differential and a 30mm wider front track.
Peugeot hasn't said, but we reckon the 308 R would also match the RCZ R's 5.9 second 0-100km/h time.
For the sake of comparison, Volkswagen quotes 5.3 seconds for the manual Golf R, and 6.5 seconds for the manual GTI. Ford's Focus ST also claims 6.5 seconds.
Watch for more details to surface in the coming hours (or days).
