Peugeot's new 208 light car will go on sale in October, replacing the six year-old 207 range and bringing the little hatch in-line with the brand's newest models.

Kicking off at $18,490, the 208 will enter the market at a price point $500 lower than its predecessor. The new model will be offered with  three- and five-door styles, three engines and three trim grades.

While the overseas diesel engines are currently off the table, the recently revealed GTi flagship is expected to make its way to Australia in the second quarter of 2013.

Mechanical Package

Opening the line-up is the new 1.2 litre three-cylinder petrol engine, offering 60kW of power and 1180Nm of torque.

Available in entry-level Active trim only, the 1.2 engine is mated to a five-speed manual transmission and lists fuel consumption at 4.7 l/100km on the combined cycle.

The little engine's 0-100km/h time is listed at 13.9 seconds, and maximum speed at 175km/h.
