Peugeot has confirmed it will unveil a special 30th anniversary edition of its new 208 GTi at next week’s Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK.

Based on the new hot hatch that hit Australia nearly a year ago, the new special is expected to follow a powered-up path similar to that taken with the RCZ R that first appeared as a Goodwood concept.

Reports of a souped-up 208 GTi have been circulating for some time, and rumours last year suggested that Peugeot has been toying with the potential for a more powerful version of the pocket rocket.

In its regular form, the 208 GTi offers 147kW, but rumours suggest we could see a new model - either this confirmed special edition or a new ‘208 R’ that delivers closer to 170kW.

Likewise, the introduction of the RCZ R - now a full production model - saw power climb from 147kW in the regular model to 199kW in the new flagship.

With rival Renault expected to roll out a Gordini-badged special edition of the Clio RS, rumours that Peugeot is considering tweaking its own subcompact hot hatch aren't all that surprising.

Watch for more details to come next week.
