Fiat Australia has today announced the release of the Fiat 500 Diesel - but it's not what you were expecting.

Developed in cooperation with the fashion label of the same name, the 500 By Diesel is a purely style-oriented special-edition version of the current petrol-powered 500.

Limited to just 100 units in Australia, the 500 By Diesel gets a number of unique design features, including 16-inch alloy wheels, Diesel-specific satin side mouldings, satin flared rear-view mirrors, a satin grille and a special rear panel with the Diesel logo.

Inside, the 500 By Diesel gets logo-emblazoned denim cloth trim, along with a jeans-like pocket on the front seat sides and a logo on the dash.

Diesel's "Be Brave" logo is also featured on the wheels, the gear knob and the door-sill trims.

Standard equipment includes a glass electric sunroof, climate control air conditioning, front electric windows, remote central locking and boot release.

Fiat's Blue&Me Telematics system is also featured, offering with voice activated Bluetooth hands-free phone connection and the Blue&Me Nav system for the first time in Australia.

What it doesn't get is a warning about what fuel should go into the tank. Mechanically, the 500 By Diesel is identical to the regular model; powered by a 74kW and 132Nm 1.4 litre petrol engine. The 0-100km/h sprint is covered in a claimed 10.5 seconds, and fuel consumption is listed at 6.3 l/100km.

The 500 By Diesel is available in both six-speed manual and Dualogic automatic form. (So... how many of them are going to end up with a tankful of the wrong juice?)

Pricing

  • 2011 Fiat 500 By Diesel Manual - $25,990 + ORC
  • 2011 Fiat 500 By Diesel Dualogic - $27,990 + ORC

In Australia, Fiat has sold 135 of its Fiat 500 cars so far this year, compared to 138 for the same period in 2010. May saw 33 500s find a new home, marking an improvement on last May's 25 sales.
