Although shown as a concept car at the Paris Motor Show, our European mates have told us you can take it as good as ‘done’ that BMW will launch the stunning all-new X2 compact SUV within the next 12 months.
In fact, spy shots of X2 prototypes under test are already doing the rounds.
And ‘jaw-dropping’ would be an understatement for the exterior style…some have labeled it a Crossover/SUV/Coupe.
We love the muscly shoulder line, some serious cutouts in the rear bumper and the steeply-raked C-pillars (we hope the production version maintains those BMW badges in the pillars too).
It remains to be seen if the wheel-arch and lower body plastic protective cladding – used to ‘butch-up’ the looks as much as provide protection from stone chips – makes it into production.
The front-end follows the traditional BMW styling manual – but only just!
For starters, the signature four headlights are gone – replaced by some sharp, raked lights - there’s a new version of the kidney grille, a ‘rolled’ leading edge for the bonnet and massive are intakes.
Noticeably the side fender air extractor vents which feature in many current generation BMWs seem to have been ditched for the X2.
The word in Paris was that BMW will launch the X2 with a 145kW turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine and the 2.0-litre turbo-diesel in three different levels of output. We’re also told a 225kW ‘M’ version is in the pipeline (turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine).
There will be both front-drive and AWD versions and both six-speed automatic and six-speed manual transmissions (the latter an unlikely starter for Australia).
