“Look out Tesla” – that was the reaction at the Paris Motor Show when Mercedes-Benz unveiled its ‘Generation EQ’ electric crossover.

‘Benz says the scalable chassis architecture and powertrains developed for the EQ will morph into future electric cars in most market segments from SUVs to two-seat convertibles. Word on the street in Paris says the crossover version displayed could enter production very quickly (including some chassis components in carbon-fibre).

In fact ‘EQ’ will be the Mercedes version of BMW ‘i’ electric sub-brand – so it’s got serious volume aspirations and isn’t just marketing puffery.

“We’re now flipping the switch,” CEO Dieter Zetsche told the media preview in Paris. “We’re ready for the launch of an electric product offensive that will cover all vehicle segments from the compact to the luxury class.”
