Police in Victoria shut down an alleged 'hoon gathering' this week in the northern suburb of Campbellfield, arresting two and issuing 52 Notices of Unroadworthiness. 

As part of Operation Friction 2, police have been monitoring hoon activities in Melbourne's north, west and southern suburbs. According to North West Road Policing Acting Superintendent Stephen Mutton, the illegal events have been known to attract more than 200 cars on Monday and Wednesday nights.

"These gatherings are taking place in varying industrial estates in suburbs such as Campbellfield, Thomastown, Laverton, Altona North and Port Melbourne, and can sometimes attract as many as 400 people," A/Supt. Mutton said.

"Usually around a dozen cars undertake in hoon behaviour, very close to the crowd, who look on."

He Mutton said that group leaders have been arranging meets at several locations each night, usually at industrial estates.

The operation saw 75 vehicles intercepted, while over 200 people were spoken to by police.

Four vehicles were impounded, 52 people were issued with Notices of Unroadworthiness, four people received a penalty notice for driving an unregistered vehicle and 72 other traffic offences were detected.

Twenty-nine EPA notices were issued and two men were arrested for' Conduct Endangering Person's and 'Drive in a Manner Dangerous'.

The Sheriff’s Office spoke to 41 defendants where 409 warrants were executed and $119,736 was recovered in outstanding fines.
