GM's premium European brand Opel has revealed that it will launch three all-new engine families over the coming year, replacing a number of its existing powertrains.

The new engines will cover both petrol and diesel applications, but for now, the carmaker has released details for just one of the three units: a new 1.6 litre turbocharged petrol mill.

Utilising GM's Spark Ignition Direct Injection (SIDI) and stop/start technologies, the new ECOTEC engine will be offered in varying states of tune, topping out at 147kW at 4700rpm and 300Nm of torque at 1700rpm.

"Our new 1.6 liter direct injection engine is a real giant in terms of torque. Power builds up very smoothly and quietly,” Opel director of gasoline engines, Thomas Johnen said.

Fuel consumption figures have not been released, but GM claims a 13 percent improvement to fuel use and CO2 emissions when compared to the engine's 1.6 litre turbo predecessor.

Production of the new 1.6 litre engine will kick off later this year at GM's Szentgotthardt plant in Hungary.

Opel Australia will launch in September with the Insignia, Astra, Astra GTC and Corsa models.
