Opel boss Karl-Thomas Neumann is reportedly frustrated that the brand’s SUV range is lacking players in certain model segments, and now General Motors may be about to address his concerns.

A new large SUV could be on the way for both Opel and Vauxhall, based on the next Insignia midsized wagon.

The new model could serve as a flagship SUV and a rival to Ford’s large Edge, and may be seen in European showrooms as soon as 2018.

"One of our major weaknesses is that we don't have a great SUV portfolio,” Mr Neumann said, speaking with Auto Express.

“We have one SUV, the Mokka, and it's very successful, so we want more."

Along with the Insignia-based model, Neumann said GM would alter the styling of its next Meriva and Zafira models for Europe to make them more SUV-like.
