Mid-sized cars are rapidly becoming the new black, but the market for large family and executive cars is a very long way from dead. According to some reports, it's these buyers that Opel executives are thinking about right now.

Germany's Auto Motor und Sport is reporting that Opel is investigating a new large sedan, with CEO Karl-Friedrich Stracke dropping a hint in a recent interview.

"We need a car above the Insignia and we are working [on it]," Stracke told the German magazine.

If Opel is working on something bigger than the award-winning Insignia (it's yet to confirm anything officially), the long-wheelbase version of GM's Epsilon II platform will likely form its foundations.

The current Isignia, Opel's largest sedan offering, is built on the Epsilon platform, while the longer Epsilon II platform is used by Holden's upcoming Malibu sedan for Australia.

Earlier reports have also pointed to a hybrid or hydrogen fuel-cell powered model, although a drivetrain based on the Chevrolet Volt may also be on the cards.

The large sedan reportedly carries the project name "TOL" (Top Of the Line), but beyond that, little is known.
