Opel's fourth-generation Corsa is coming to the end of its lifetime, and while an Australian debut for the current car is scheduled for this year, an all-new model won't be far away.
Reports out of Europe this week suggest the next Corsa will utilise the Gamma II platform that underpins the new Holden Barina and the high-riding Opel Mokka, potentially cutting more than 50kg from the current model's kerb weight.
According to Germany's Auto Motor und Sport, power is expected to come from a turbocharged 1.0 litre three-cylinder engine, although the Mokka's 1.4 and 1.6 litre engines (the latter also shared with the Barina) could be on the cards.
The report adds that cost considerations will see the new Corsa retain the torsion-beam rear suspension arrangement featured in the current model, and a more aggressive look is expected.
Talk of a new flagship model above the midsized Insignia continues, with Opel boss Karl-Friedrich Stracke telling press recently that a new large sedan will help the brand compete with other luxury marques.
"I believe we need a top of the line car to be positioned in the luxury segment. The Insignia car has done a great job of showing we can make premium-like products, but establishing ourselves properly in this territory will be a long journey," Stracke said.
If Opel is looking at a new large car, the long-wheelbase version of GM's Epsilon II platform will likely form its foundations.
The current Isignia, Opel's largest sedan offering, is built on the Epsilon platform, while the longer Epsilon II platform is used by Holden's upcoming Malibu sedan for Australia.
