Opel has announced the availability of a new 1.4 litre turbocharged petrol engine for its Corsa light hatch, which brings with it a fuel-saving auto start-stop feature.

The new engine produces 88kW of power and 175Nm of torque, and delivers a zero to 100km/h time of 10.5 seconds and a top speed of 195km/h.

Its focus isn't on speed though. Tuned for economy, the 1.4 turbo is mated to a five-speed manual transmission and is equipped with engine start-stop, which turns off the engine when the vehicle is stopped to save fuel.

The engine re-starts automatically when the clutch pedal is depressed, and the system helps the Corsa 1.4 achieve an average fuel economy figure of 5.5 l/100km.

At this stage it's unclear if the 1.4 turbo mill will be available on Australian-delivered Corsas. Opel is due to launch in Australia at the end of July, when local pricing and specifications will be revealed for the Corsa, Astra and Insignia.
