The OPC performance flagship in Opel’s Astra range will soon join the local family, following an appearance at next week’s Australian International Motor Show (AIMS).
Opel’s local team had confirmed that the hot hatch was under consideration in the leadup to the brand’s recent launch, but has now revealed the model will find its way here early next year.
The Astra OPC (Opel Performance Centre) will sit above the existing GTC model, with a 206kW/400Nm 2.0 litre turbo four delivering a healthy performance advantage over the GTC’s 132kW/230Nm 1.6 litre turbo.
Opel quotes 0-100km/h performance of 6.0 seconds, placing the OPC in Volkswagen Scirocco R and Renault Megane RS 265 territory.
Also aligning OPC with such esteemed rivals is a more extroverted styling and interior package that closely silhouettes Opel’s 2010 GTC Paris concept.
As with the production GTC, Astra OPC uses Opel’s HiPerStrut front suspension design, but adds FlexRide multi-mode dampers, a mechanical LSD and Brembo brakes to help deal with the 2.0 litre’s performance.
