The OPC performance flagship in Opel’s Astra range will soon join the local family, following an appearance at next week’s Australian International Motor Show (AIMS).

Opel’s local team had confirmed that the hot hatch was under consideration in the leadup to the brand’s recent launch, but has now revealed the model will find its way here early next year.

The Astra OPC (Opel Performance Centre) will sit above the existing GTC model, with a 206kW/400Nm 2.0 litre turbo four delivering a healthy performance advantage over the GTC’s 132kW/230Nm 1.6 litre turbo.

Opel quotes 0-100km/h performance of 6.0 seconds, placing the OPC in Volkswagen Scirocco R and Renault Megane RS 265 territory.

Also aligning OPC with such esteemed rivals is a more extroverted styling and interior package that closely silhouettes Opel’s 2010 GTC Paris concept.

As with the production GTC, Astra OPC uses Opel’s HiPerStrut front suspension design, but adds FlexRide multi-mode dampers, a mechanical LSD and Brembo brakes to help deal with the 2.0 litre’s performance.

Like all modern OPC models, the Astra has been subjected to a tortuous 10,000km testing program on the 20.8km Nürburgring Nordschleife, but Opel is making no mention of an official lap time.

“It is a car that driving enthusiasts can comfortably commute in during the week, and on weekends, enjoy on the track”, Opel Australia boss Bill Mott said.

This is not the first time Australia has seen an Astra OPC model however, with the Holden Astra SRi Turbo of 2004 and the HSV VXR of 2006-09 also sold as OPC models in their native Germany.

Local pricing of this latest version is yet to be confirmed, but we would hope for a sub $50,000 price tag to help combat the OPC’s aforementioned German and French rivals.

Opel currently offers three ranges in Australia: the light Corsa hatch, small Astra hatch and wagon range, and the midsized Insignia sedan and wagon.
