It's a little too late for the sadly defunct Opel Australia, but over in Europe the Astra GTC now sports a more powerful version of its 1.6 litre turbo inline four, taking it even closer to the performance of its bigger brother the Astra OPC.

While the 2013 Astra GTC had 132kW underfoot, the 2014 GTC gets its wick turned up to a respectable 147kW.

Not quite enough for entry to the hot hatch club these days, but still enough power to get the GTC to 100km/h in 7.9 seconds.

The powertrain changes haven't been limited to just power either. Fuel efficiency and refinement have been addressed, with consumption dropping to 6.6 l/100km from the previous model's 7.3 l/100km, and twin balancer shafts smoothing out engine vibrations.

The performance boost strengthens the Astra GTC's position as a warm hatch.

With a similar front independent suspension as the Astra OPC and the same slippery two-door bodyshell, it's the perfect middle ground between the hard-core OPC and the more pedestrian models in the Astra range.

It doesn't come cheap though. In its home market of Germany the 2014 Astra GTC is priced at €25,500 - roughly AU$39,000.

Last year Holden slipped the previous Astra GTC's 132kW turbo 1.6 under the bonnet of the Cruze SRi, so will 2014 see the warm Cruze adopt the new GTC's 147kW mill? We'll have to wait and see.
