With the Astra GTC in the range, Opel's Australian family will include the small Astra five- and three-door variants, the Astra Tourer wagon, the light Corsa three- and five-door, along with the midsized Insignia Sedan and Tourer.
“We are excited to be able to present this dynamic car to Australians, as it offers the ideal blend of emotion and functionality, and expect our “hot hatch” to bring a breath of fresh air into the sports compact segment," Opel Australia boss Bill Mott said.
Based on the GTC Paris concept (which later debuted as the flagship Astra OPC), the GTC gets more of a 'hot hatch' look than the regular five-door, thanks to its flowing roofline, larger wheels - up to 20 inches - wide-open front bumper and beefier guards.
Australian specifications for the Astra GTC have not been revealed, but European variants include three petrol engines and one diesel-powered option.
The line-up kicks off with a 88kW 1.4 litre turbo petrol, along with a 103kW version of the same engine. This latter engine spec is also offered with Australia's Holden Cruze SRi.
A 133kW 1.6 litre turbo rounds out the petrol engines, while a 121kW 2.0 litre turbodiesel holds up the diesel engine.
Opel says the diesel variant offers fuel consumption figures of 4.9 l/100km, making for a theoretical 1100km range from the 56 litre tank.
With the Astra GTC locked in, performance fans will now be hoping for news of the ultra-hot OPC version.
Revealed late last year, the OPC variant is the flagship in the Astra range, its 2.0 litre turbocharged and direct-injected four-cylinder engine delivering 208kW and 400Nm of torque.
“OPC would be naturally at home in a market like Australia where drivers appreciate great performance and handling in large cars and hot hatches,” Mott said.
An Australian debut for the OPC range is under consideration, but the brand's local arm will evaluate the potential for performance models depending on the success of its wider line-up.
